Dark corners : a novel / Ruth Rendell.
"When his father dies, Carl Martin inherits a house in an increasingly rich and trendy London neighborhood. Carl needs cash, however, so he rents the upstairs room and kitchen to the first person he interviews, Dermot McKinnon. That was colossal mistake number one. Mistake number two was keeping his father's bizarre collection of homeopathic "cures" that he found in the medicine cabinet, including a stash of controversial diet pills. Mistake number three was selling fifty of those diet pills to a friend, who is then found dead. Dermot seizes a nefarious opportunity and begins to blackmail Carl, refusing to pay rent, and creepily invading Carl's space. Ingeniously weaving together two storylines that finally merge in one shocking turn, Ruth Rendell describes one man's spiral into darkness-- and murder-- as he falls victim to a diabolical foe he cannot escape" -- Provided by publisher.

Carl Martin inherits a house in a chic new part of London but must rent out the upstairs, as he is short on cash. Meanwhile, he never got rid of his eccentric father's collection of homeopathic cures, including some diet pills he sold to a friend who promptly turns up dead. Soon, his tenant is blackmailing him. What will Carl do next? With Rendell's death in May 2015, this could be the last we hear of her darkly unsettling voice, which won her three Edgars, plus four Gold Daggers and a Diamond Dagger for outstanding contribution to the genre from the Crime Writers' Association.

Carl Martin, an aspiring writer, has inherited a house from his father, and life is going well for him until he decides to rent some upstairs rooms to Dermot McKinnon for some extra income. When a friend dies from an overdose of diet pills that Carl had sold from his father's stash, Dermot learns of Carl's role in the tragedy and blackmails him into giving him free use of the rental rooms. Carl's mental state spirals into an obsession that gains control over his life and governs every action. Verdict The Edgar Awardâwinning author (The Girl Next Door) died this past May, so this could be her last hurrah. It is a tale of psychological suspense that is as engrossing as any of her other excellent works. Fans of mystery and suspense will appreciate Rendell's unequaled ability to portray an average person's descent into a psychological quagmire.
